RE: Transmission Trouble in Mexico

I don't know about Mexico but sometimes the warrantee is no good in a foreign country. I live in the US on the Canadian border and hear this all the time when people try to get work done under warrantee. This works both ways, Canadians sometimes have trouble over here and we sometimes have trouble over there getting work done under warrantee.

jlscs, Here are some of the reasons I feel you should be using an LT tire instead of a ST tire on your trailer. JMO, but, I believe the trouble with ST tires lies with the original specifications of the tire. The ST tire is not DOT rated for passenger carry while the LT tire is. Because the ST tire is not made to the same stringent specifications as the LT tire, we will have more problems with them. In other words the ST tire is a cheaper tire than the LT tire, it's too bad we can't get LT tires in all the same sizes as you can the ST tire. Most people want to keep up with traffic when towing and will drive between 65 and 75 or even faster, and do so for hours at a time. Others will load their trailers with all the "stuff" they want to take and because they don't weigh their set ups, wind up overloading the tires, this could also happen if you are using LT tires. I also think you should switch from a Chinese ST tire to a US made LT tire IF YOU CAN FIND ONE IN YOUR SIZE. The ST tire is only speed rated for 65 MPH. The LT tire is rated at 75 MPH or more and gives a greater safety margin when driving at any speed. Most of the heavier trailers come from the manufacturer with LT tires. By the Way, I'm a firm believer in Goodyear tires and have been using them for many years. I have all Goodyear tires on both my trailer and TV at this time and have never had a tire problem. I use LT tires on both the trailer and TV.

Maxxis load range E. Bought 4 for just over $100 apiece. Love em so far. Is this a Goodyear tire? jlscjs, After your last question I think you need a lesson in tire selection. Here's some information I think will help you to decide which tire and how to tell just what you're getting. I would use a LT tire rather than the ST tire if you can find one in your size that will hold the weight at the psi your wheels can handle. Goodyear makes the Wrangler LT tire in a 15" size that might work for you depending on the weight carried and the pressure your wheels can handle. Don't forget that the ST tire is speed rated at 65 MPH maximum. If you want to find out the when & where about your tires, go to this site and follow the directions, you can find out where your tires were made. The last four numbers in the DOT code (only on one side of the tire) is the week and year the tires were made, (2207 would be the 22nd week of 2007). If you have a three digit code the tires were made before 2000.

RE: 5th Wheel Towing with a HDT

Now another thing that sure got my attention now was that picture towing double with a HDT and FW. DW really likes having a little car and we had hers transported to FL for our snowbirding season this year. I found she was right and having two vehicles is a big plus. I was thinking of doing this with my TV and a motorcycle someday, but if I could tow a small car double that would be an awesome plus. Hi davelinde, We are just up the road from you in Sanford for the winter. I wanted to tell you it's not legal to tow double in FL and most of the rest of the east coast states as well. You will see the occasional double tow in FL but those who tow double are pressing their luck. To get back to the HDT/MDT issue, ours has worked great for the past 15 years and is still going strong. We get about 10 mpg towing and 13.5 mpg when not towing. With our WB of 140" the turning radius is shorter than the Chevrolet Chevett of the '70s. With four wheel hydraulic disc brakes it will stop our trailer in less time with just the truck brakes than our old Dodge one ton dually would with both truck and trailer brakes working.

RE: SE Texas...Repack bearings

If you need to adjust your brakes or re-pack your wheel bearings you can find instructions and pictures on this forum in a sticky in the towing thread here.. If you do have E-Z lube bearings make sure you jack each wheel up off the ground, only use a hand operated grease gun and only give it just a few pumps while turning the wheel/tire. If you do it any other way you will run the risk of blowing out the inner seal and getting grease on your brakes. Also make sure whoever does your E-Z lube bearings understands how they should be done.

Hello I was just wondering if anyone tows a trailer behine their fifth wheel. I was thinking about towing a motorcycle trailer behind a fifth wheel toy hauler. Aside from the over length and weight violations, what do you think? Thanks Tom PS Great website for advice. Thanks all.... Tom, First let me say I'm from NY and have looked into towing two trailers so I could take a golf cart along when we go to FL. As far as NY is concerned, NY doesn't allow two trailers and as far as I know PA, NJ, NH, ME and VA as well as FL and most of the states in between don't allow towing two trailers either. If you don't have enough room in your TH for the motorcycle your best bet would be to trade up for one with more room so you can take your MC with you and not have to worry about getting a ticket for towing two trailers. The worst part about getting caught would be the probability of having to unhook and leave one trailer then coming back for it at a later time.

Mile High, Both The Texan and Wadcutter are right and while I'm at it you're also wrong about the towing double or triple thing as well. The optimal word is "towing", if your towing two trailers that would be "towing" double. There is NO state that will allow three trailers behind your tow vehicle. Therefore there is no triple "towing" allowed. One of the biggest perpetrators of the above are some of the web sites that call towing two trailers triple towing.

There are some states that do not allow double towing with an RV regardless of licensing. Not many but a few, so be sure you know where you're going. Good luck / Skip The last time I counted up the states that don't allow RV double towing the list totaled almost half the states counted. If you check the states on the east coast, almost all of them don't allow RV double towing. The reason I know the above is because I wanted to tow a little trailer with a golf cart on it behind my 5th wheel and checked into traveling from NY to FL and found that almost all the states in between would not allow RV doubles including NY and FL. I also found that the swivel wheel trailers are considered a double tow in some states as well. In NY you also need an RV endorsment on your license if the gross weight of your RV is over 26,000#.

Jen, I was wrong about getting a Xantrex 400 watt inverter on ebay. They are available on Amazon.com currently for $24.++ dollars. If you want, you can get a 700 watt inverter for just under $40 dollars. Go to this site for a look at them. These inverters are well built and look real good. They have a fan built in and the fan comes on when needed to disapate heat. Don't let the "new and used" statement scare you off, they're all new for the most part.

Jen, If all you need an inverter for is watching TV get a 400 watt inverter on line for about $30. I just bought a Zantrex 400 watt for that price with free shipping and no tax. Get a Progressive Dynamics converter that is a three/four stage unit from here. Get the 9200 series with about a 45-55 amp capacity. The reason for the 9200 series is it has the charge wizard built in and will do a great job for you. Would this be the equivalent of the charger/converter that was built into my (Freedom Combi 2000 watt) inverter (see specs below)? The RV store here has a 40 or 50 watt converter for $300. The 50'ish amp charger you're recommending. Is that input or output? If it's output, what kind of a difference will I see in terms of how much I can turn on with 50 rather than 100 amps? Jen, If you don't get at least a three stage converter you will be charging your batteries at a constant voltage and this will, over time, boil the water out of the batteries. Most converters are rated by their output, not input. You should have a converter rated at 45-55 output. If you get one rated at 45-55 amps you shouldn't notice any difference in what you can use on the 12 volt side. Most of the high end trailers will only have a converter of that size. The main thing is to get the three stage converter. To get the 400 watt inverter, do a search on e-bay for 400 watt Zantrex inverter. It's only $30 with free shipping and no tax. Hope this helps.

Jen, Just finished reading all 10 pages of your thread, here's my thoughts on your situation. When it gets real cold outside, don't forget to open the doors on your cabinets so heat gets to your pipes under the counters. I set up a schedule in Microsoft Works Calendar every ten days for ours and dump it when the computer tells me to. You did a nice job on your skirting and I'm sure you're learning a lot about the electrical workings of your 5th wheel.

RE: Ink jet refill kits

I bought a drugstore refill kit for may Canon last week. Yes it was messy but I did it in the sink and the printer works fine. Only problem is that the printer still shows ink level low. BTW I only did the large Black cartridge. I'll by new for the colors. I do the same thing with the same results on my Canon printer. I have been wondering how to tell the printer that the black ink has been refilled.

RE: Multiple RV tire Blowouts

You really need to have the rig weighed, loaded for travel. Then you can figure out many things- what rating the tires should be, what pressure they should be inflated to, and if you were not overloaded to begin with, whether the original tires might have been defective. I agree with Chris, you should get your rig weighed. You can do this at any truck stop that has a set of scales. Just make sure each axle is on a separate section of the scales when you stop on them for your weight ticket. If you have a tag axle it would be OK to weigh both your rear axles together then divide the result by the number of tires to get the weight on each tire. If you determine that your weights are close to being over then you should weigh each axle separately.

I just finished upgrading from 16" to 17.5" tires and wheels. The new 17.5" tires were actually 1/4" smaller in diameter than the old 16" tires were. Here's the link to the story.

The main reason for super singles is to lower the weight of the truck using them. When the truck weighs less they can carry more weight and by carrying more weight they make more money on each trip. The fact that they also get better mileage is another plus.

RE: Adding Air Seats to a pickup

I drove an F-650, when I hauled propane, don't remember the model year..... However, it has the same cab on it as your '92. It had a seat with a type of suspension that didn't use air. This, even though the truck had air brakes.?.? You may look to a ford dealer that sells medium duty trucks, they may be able to hook you up with this type of seat so you don't have to put a compressor on your truck. My Kodiak has the same type of seats as above. Whatever you install, make sure you have enough head room above the seat to allow for bouncing up. You don't want to get a broken neck from hitting the roof of the pick up when hitting a real bad bump.

My coach has the shutoff valves back by the main engine. You could shut off the heater core and use your generator with electric heat until you can figure out what to do about replacing the heater core.

The ST tire is only made in China, but has a payload in excess of 3,500 lbs at the same 80psi. So the Chinese say. I have wondered why the ST tires don't seem to be able to carry the rated load without coming apart. Sometimes it's because people drive faster than 65 MPH and sometimes it's because they don't weigh the trailer and overload the tires. But, could it be the Chinese over rate the tires they make?

So far they have been great and my wheels are holding up to the 80psi with no problem and about 8k miles on them. It sounds like there are only two good choices, Michelin or Maxxis but I could not get the Michelin's in 15". Good Luck About 45 years ago while I was in the Air Force I was traveling across country pulling a 30' house trailer with my '55 Plymouth. In order to stop some sway that I had in the rear of the car I over inflated my tires to about 45 psi. When I stopped to refuel I could hear hissing coming from the left rear tire/wheel and looked down to discover the rim had cracked along the tire bead. The crack was about 8" long and had just started so I really felt lucky to have discovered the crack before it let go completely. If you are over inflating your tire/wheel combination, make sure this doesn't happen to you.
